What are the different types of Nonprofit Corporations?

The IRS recognizes many different types of non-profit organizations including charitable organizations, churches and religious organizations, private foundations, political organizations, and others. The most popular type of non-profit corporation is the 501(c)(3) public charity. A non-profit organization may qualify for federal income tax exemption under section 501(c)(3) if it is organized for any qualifying purpose, including charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals.

More detailed information on tax-exempt organization types is available on the IRS website.
